“If fraternal love held all men bound,
how beautiful this world would be.”
-Justus H. Rathbone
The Civil War saved the Union but strained the relations of American citizens of the North and the South. In order to bring the fighting men of both sides back together, Justus H. Rathbone developed the initiation of the Knights of Pythias, inspired by the legendary friendship of Damon and Pythias. His dream was that the story of brotherly love would inspire peace and fellowship between the war-torn states.
